“The movie has so many aspects: is super modern in terms of visuals, and at the same it’s a period film,” Navarrete explained. “There is Heaven, Earth, the Underworld, love, war, demons, etc, so I thought that every possible tool at hand could be used. We had first at all a big orchestra and choir, then quite a lot of electronics, and traditional Chinese instruments: pipa, erhu-like fiddle, and xiao.”

Javier Navarrete was born in 1956 in Teruel, Spain. After studying with Chilean composer Gabriel Brncic in Barcelona, he became involved in avant garde performances and electronic music research. In 1986 he wrote the score for his first film, a horror cult movie called IN A GLASS CAGE. A number of Spanish and English movies followed. Director Guillermo del Toro asked him to write the music for THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE, first, and then, PAN’S LABYRINTH, which garnered him an Oscar® Nomination for Original Score, and a Grammy® Nomination for Best Score Soundtrack for Motion Picture. Navarrete lived in Los Angeles participating on the active artistic scene as well as making studio movies, among them the blockbuster WRATH OF THE TITANS, while still collaborating with European directors, like Jordan Scott, in the movie CRACKS. In 2012 he scored the movie for HBO’S HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN, with cutting edge director Philip Kaufman and editor Walter Murch, with Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman in the title roles, for which he received an Emmy® Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a TV Movie. Back in Europe, Javier lives in London and Barcelona, and has collaborated with director Neil Jordan in BYZANTIUM.

ZHONG KUI: SNOW GIRL AND THE DARK CRYSTAL is an action-packed adventure for the senses that utilizes the latest in 3D and VFX technology to present a truly engulfing experience. The film is about legendary Chinese anti-hero Zhong Kui (Chen Kun), a young man endowed with mysterious powers. He is forced into battle among the realms of Heaven, Earth and Hell in a dire attempt to save his countrymen and rescue the woman (Li Bingbing) he loves. ZHONG KUI: SNOW GIRL AND THE DARK CRYSTAL is produced and directed by Academy Award Winning Cinematographer Peter Pau (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON).

“I thought the movie had three or four main areas: the longer-than-life love between Zhong Kui and Snow Girl, the Underworld, the God and the way he trains and uses Zhong Kui so I made one cue of each of these worlds to start with,” said Navarrete. “The score had to be big in scope and sound, given the magnificent visuals and the story. And it had to have tenderness as much as power.”
