This London musical about the mild dentist Dr Crippen who murdered his wife and escaped with his young lover Ethel le Neve, only to be caught on the high seas by the first use of telegraph, brought back to England and hanged, was a notable theatrical failure, but, as this Decca original cast recording demonstrates, its score was inventive, witty and memorable. Impeccably cast with some of the best musical performers of the period, Monty Norman’s score is one of the most magical of the 1960s, blending the flavours of music-hall and opera in a unique way. This, in fact, is Britain’s answer to Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Causing controversy at the time of its original production, this was a musical well ahead of its time, now restored to the catalogue after forty years of neglect.
With: George Benson, Virginia Vernon, Rose Hill, Nicolette Roeg, Jerry Desmonde
