To celebrate his 85th birthday, Ennio Morricone is to undertake a world-tour including concerts in France, the USA, Russia, Germany and Turkey. On February 4th 2014 he will be appearing in Paris-Bercy for a one-off concert conducting a Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. This is the ideal opportunity for the Ecoutez le cinéma! collection to release an exceptional anthology devoted to a living legend in film-music: a double CD album freely conceived as a sentimental journey through fifty years in international films. The concept? To bring together soundtracks objectively considered as today's standards, but also some rarer scores and others which have never been released before. This new collection features the Maestro's unavoidable masterpieces for Sergio Leone, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the two Once Upon a Time… movies (In America, In the West) or A Fistful of Dynamite; Giuliano Montaldo (Sacco & Vanzetti); Henri Verneuil (The Sicilian Clan); Georges Lautner (The Professional); Brian de Palma (The Untouchables) and Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso), together with some (very) original soundtracks which Morricone composed for Saturday-night movies: spaghetti westerns, the giallo genres and other erotica… The journey also covers several scores previously unavailable on CD (The Key) or never released anywhere, like The Demons of San Pietroburgo or the Italian television series Come un delfino, plus two cues from Orca, restored from the original master-tapes. And there's also a double-bonus: songs performed by Joan Baez, Sting, Gérard Depardieu, Zucchero and Dulce Pontes, and the golden timbres of some of the magical soloists who gave the Maestro's writing another dimension — the voice of soprano Edda Dell'Orso, the harmonica played by Franco de Gemini, and the whistling of Alessandro Alessandroni. In the end, these two and one half hours of Essential Ennio Morricone reveal every facet and idiom of a hyperactive genius inspired by all kinds of films. In the words of French director Francis Girod, 'Morricone is the cinematographer's Verdi. His originality is a subtle dose of lyricism and irony. He's not only a great film-musician but a great musician. End of story.'
